I grew up in a town where no one knew anyone much beyond their immediate neighbors. Everyone I knew shopped at the mall and worked in the city. The craving to “get ahead” limited the capacity to experience a sense of community and the desire to preserve and enjoy the natural beauty all around us. I came to Nantucket and immediately fell in love with it. The quality of the air itself seemed different to me here — sharper, cleaner; the quality of the light – clearer. There was a slower pace of life here, a community where people saw their friends and neighbors as they shopped at the local stores and stopped to chat with each other downtown. I had a sense of being enveloped by both the community and the peaceful beauty & vast, open spaces of this incredible place. To me, I can think of no better way to spend my time and energy than working with this strong and active board to preserve both that sense of community and the health of our lovely environment, which together contribute to an exceptional quality-of-life here on this island.
