I grew up in a town where no one knew anyone much beyond their immediate neighbors. Everyone I knew shopped at huge grocery stores and worked in the city. There was no community, and very little connection to the land, or to each other.  I came to Nantucket and immediately fell in love with it.  There was a slower pace of life here,  where people saw their friends and neighbors as they shopped at the local stores and stopped to chat with each other downtown. For me, it was the first time I had shopped at a local farm, and met the people who grew my food, and began to understand what was missing from the place where I grew up. I learned about what it takes to grow healthy food and how our nation’s current system of industrialized agriculture is stressing our environment, our bodies, and our communities. This journey of discovery led me to Sustainable Nantucket. I can think of no better way to spend my time and energy than working to build a more self-reliant and sustainable local food economy here on the island.

Working for Sustainable Nantucket has opened my eyes. It is easy to walk through life without thinking of your community, the land that shelters you, and the food that feeds you. Sustainable Nantucket’s programs bring awareness to these most basic needs. I feel lucky to be able to work with our community to create positive change, to help educate our youth and encourage sustainability and self-sufficiency for Nantucket Island.
