Helping the Garden Grow – Summer Camp at the NES Garden

This Summer, Sustainable Nantucket donated time to the Community School’s Summer Day Camp. Farm to School Interns Maria King and Elizabeth Murphy taught campers about planting, weeding, & cultivating in the Nantucket Elementary School garden, and guided them through a number of fun educational activities and projects focused around the garden.

Campers participated in weeding contests and won prizes like tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and more. They painted signs and rocks to beautify the garden, and they learned about important farming-related topics such as plant disease, plant type and species, insects, and composting. Campers also learned how to roast sunflower heads to create edible sunflower seeds, and wrote letters to and drew pictures for First Lady Michelle Obama asking that she come visit the NES garden and the Farm to School program! Is there a visit from the First Lady in Nantucket’s future? We’ll keep you posted!
