2013 Agricultural Apprenticeships are Here!

Sustainable Nantucket is seeking agricultural intern/ apprentices to participate in our Apprenticeship Program. Successful candidates may be High School, College or Post-graduate students and will be paired with one of six island farms / growers, or with our Farm to School Coordinator — experiencing and participating in many aspects of small-scale farming in our sensitive island environment, from greenhouse cultivation to field planting and harvest to farm stand sales. They will participate in the Sustainable Nantucket Farmers & Artisans Market, and possibly in restaurant / food service delivery. There are also required reading / responses.

Spring Farm to School Apprenticeship: 10 hours per week, beginning in April of 2013. Application deadline, March 1, 2013. Wages are $8.50 per hour

Summer Farm & Farm to School Apprenticeships: 10 – 30 hours per week, depending. Ideal time-frame is April to September, but some farms will accept June to September or October.   Application Deadline:  March 16, 2013. Minimum Qualifications:  Strong interest in sustainable agriculture and the practical aspects /business of farming. Gardening / farming experience and retail sales experience not required but helpful. Wages are $8.50 per hour

Summer/Fall Farmers & Artisans Market Apprenticeships: Market intern to run SNAP program (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly Food Stamps) for the public during Market hours Saturdays 9:00am – 1:00pm June 8 through October 12 and Tuesdays 3:30-6:30 July 2 through August 27. Responsibilities include running the EBT machine, helping to promote the program, answering questions at information table, selling non-profit merchandise. An additional two hours a week are spent at SN offices entering data and tallying numbers. $13/hour. Sunmer/Fall Farmers & Artisans Market unpaid internship, Market Managing intern to assist Market Manager in all managing duties, including helping with set-up and take-down, assisting vendors, staffing information tables, selling non-profit merchandise, Saturdays 7am-2:30pm June 8 though October 12, or part.
