October is National Farm to School Month

NF2S monthSustainable Nantucket and the Nantucket Public Schools are celebrating National Farm to School Month. For the month of October we will be highlighting the connection between schools and local food and bringing light to the importance of this program in improving nutrition, supporting local economies and educating children about the origins of food.

Below are listed some of our highlighted events and activities:

Harvest of the Week – We will be highlighting a different local fall vegetable each week in the school lunches. In the NHS and CPS cafeterias we will feature guest chefs from local restaurants and farmers who help keep island agriculture alive.

Family Garden Workshop: Art in the Garden – Families are invited to work with local artists in the garden in creating garden sculptures, decorative garden signs and other garden related crafts.

“Half-Day” in the Garden – Students in grades 1-5 are welcome to sign-up to spend the afternoon of October 23rd doing various gardening activities in the Joyce n. Furman (Farm to School) Youth Garden
