The School Year is a Wrap, with Radishes!

radish harvest The late arrival of spring to Nantucket didn’t stop students participating in the Farm to School Program from producing a beautiful bounty of delicious radishes. In early April a group of students from the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club helped us sow our first crop of “Easter Egg” radishes which were served in the Nantucket Public School cafeteria’s a little over month radish

This quick growing crop lent itself to a great educational opportunity for the 3rd grade students who learned about the life cycle of the radish, observing the flower, seeds, stem, and roots, before planting their own crop. During this process they also observed the components of soil the radishes were grown in and were introduced to the importance and the production of compost.
