Becoming a Beginning Farmer through the SN Community Farm Institute (CFI) Program

group lookingHow Do I Become a Beginning Farmer at the Walter F. Ballinger Educational Community Farm?

There are 2 tracks for prospective beginning farmers to apply for a 1/8 acre parcel on the Farm and receive the benefit of our shared infrastructure, tools and training. Track One is for less exprienced begining growers. Track 2 is for beginning growers with some experience in farming.

All interested parties must fill out and submit a commitment form / application to the program and complete an approved business plan.

Track 1: Complete the Farm Business Training Course (minimum 2/3rds attendance required) and develop an approved business plan.  Track 2: If you feel you have enough growing experience already, complete and submit an approved business plan.

If your business plan is accepted,  you will be asked to remit an annual program participation fee of $200.

This adult and child-friendly workshop will have activities for all ages demonstrating how to start seeds indoors, plan your garden design and prepare your garden plot.

Family Garden Workshop – “Art in the Garden”

Our Fall Family Garden Workshop will be held this Saturday, October 26th from 10:30am – 12:00pm in the Joyce N. Furman Youth (Farm to School) Garden located on the NES playground.

Join the Sustainable Nantucket Farm to School Program and local artists Matthew Oates and Lindsay Feller in creating wonderful pieces of garden art.

In this hands-on workshop, these two artists will share their expertise, teaching participants how to create wonderful pieces of artwork to add year-round beauty to any garden space.
