Farm to School’s Radish Lesson on Inherited Traits of Plants

Why do you look like your parents? Why do some animals look different than their parents? When you plant a seed, how do you know what the plant will look like?Students at Nantucket Public Schools pondered questions such as these while learning about inherited traits in plants, variation of traits and the affects of environmental factors on living things. Planting radishes was part of this engaging hands-on lesson! This lesson, developed and delivered by Sustainable Nantucket’s Farm to School program, echoes what students are already learning in class and are based on Massachusetts state standards for science

Farm to School in the Winter

What do we do at Farm to School when it is too cold to bring students to the garden?

When it’s too cold to bring students to the garden, our Farm to School Coordinator Calin Duke brings the garden to the school. Recently she has been discussing healthy eating habits with the first graders of Nantucket Elementary School. Students shared their knowledge of the five food groups. One class discussed their favorite way to prepare broccoli; “Let my parents cook it!” said one child. Farm to School hosts a variety of lessons and activities in the school during the winter. When it is warmer, the fun continues outside in the Joyce N. Furman Youth Garden, as well. Look for upcoming activities in the spring here!

Harvest Dinner 2017: Thank You All Who Attended and Helped

Sustainable Nantucket’s Farm to School Harvest Dinner 2017: On Wednesday the 15th, the community was treated to a delicious Harvest Dinner of pasta with vegetarian marinara sauce, green salad, french bread and dessert. All of the ingredients were locally grown or locally sourced–much of it donated. Our Harvest Dinner is an opportunity for the community to come together and recognize the collaboration of  Nantucket Public Food Services, Food Rescue Nantucket and local farms.

Taste Test Success with Guest Chef

October is Farm to School Month! What better way to celebrate then by eating locally grown produce cooked by a local chef? 

Chef Chris Morris has been a part of the restaurant and hospitality business on Nantucket for over twenty years. He currently is a private chef committed to local sourcing and sustainable cooking. On October 26th he offered the students of Cyrus Peirce Middle School and Nantucket High School a taste of locally grown cuisine created using produce grown at Nantucket’s Lazy Man Garden. Students enjoyed  Spice-rubbed Butternut Squash along with Chopped Kale Salad-yum!

Be a Garden Explorer After School!

Garden Explorers will learn to grow healthy food, healthy bodies and healthy minds in this fun and hands-on after-school program led by Sustainable Nantucket’s Farm to School Program!  Activities will include learning to plant and growharvest and taste vegetables, and play and make art in the Joyce N. Furman Youth Garden

Who: Children in Grades K-5

When: 2:30pm-4:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 26th-November 2nd

Price: $160/session

Drop Off & Pick Up: Students will meet our Farm to School Staff at the end of the school day in the NES cafeteria and walk to the garden together. Participants are to be picked up 4:30pm at the Joyce N. Furman Youth Garden located on First Way. Students participating in aftercare programs will be escorted to their next activity by Farm to School staff.

The Radishes are ready for a Fun Filled Summer, Are You?!

Join us for this Summer’s Children’s ACK Farming & Gardening Program, where we will be planting seeds, exploring the garden, and learning about local agriculture through hands on activities!

The Program runs from the 10th of July until the 18th of August! In each week long camp we will be digging into new themes, and learning, creating, and growing in our natural environment!

Farm to School Summer Programs!

Summer Bridge

This program is a collaboration between Farm to School and the Community School that “bridges” students back into the school year by incorporating academic elements into a fun week of camp exploring and learning about farming, food systems and our natural habitat!
Summer Bridge is Monday-Friday, 8:30am-3:30pm from August 21st-September 1st. This program is available to children ages 6-12 who have participated in Garden Explorers in Spring 2016, ACK Farming and Gardening in Summer 2017, or another ACKventure program in Summer 2017. ACK Farming and Gardening

ACK Farming and Gardening is held in Farm to School’s own Joyce N. Furman Youth Garden off of First Way! Activities include planting, watering, harvesting, tasting, making garden art, and so much more!
ACK Farming and Gardening is Monday-Friday, 9:00am-12:00pm (this can be joined with Nantucket Community School’s ACKventure Extended Day program for a seamless, all-day summer adventure!) from July 10th-August 18th and is available for students ages 6-12.
