Farm to Fork classes source as much local produce as possible as participants learn how food affects our bodies and our community! Participants will bring home lessons about the local food system and a sample of the dishes made alongside one of Nantucket’s finest chefs!

Farm to School is hosting a Half-Day in the Garden to celebrate Nantucket Elementary School’s Half-Day from School on May 10th!

Registered participants will meet at the end of the school day in the NES cafeteria and walk to the garden to enjoy their packed lunches and celebrate their half-day with an afternoon of planting vegetables, tending to plants, learning science, and having fun in the Joyce N. Furman Youth Garden!

Who: Students in Grades K-5

Where: Students will be picked up at the Joyce N. Furman Youth Garden off of First Way

When: May 10th from Dismissal (12:00pm)-2:30pm

Join Farm to School as we learn learn new culinary skills, create and taste new dishes, and learn about our local food system in our Farm to Fork Cooking Classes for Kids!

Participants will bring local food lessons and a sample of the dishes home to share! Each class will feature a different theme and local food topic- register for one class or all!

Children’s Farm to Fork Cooking Classes will be co-instructed by Farm to School staff and a different Nantucket chef each week including: Greg Margolis (Culinary Director at Nantucket Culinary Center), Chris Morris (Private Chef at Nantucket On Island Chefs), and Andrea Solimeo (Executive Chef at Ventuno)!

Garden Explorers Registration!

Register for Garden Explorer’s After-School Program!

Garden Explorers will learn to grow healthy food, healthy bodies and healthy minds in this fun and hands-on after-school program led by Sustainable Nantucket’s Farm to School Program! Activities will include learning to plant and grow, harvest and taste vegetables, and play and make art in the Joyce N. Furman Youth Garden!

Who: Children in Grades K-5

When: 2:30pm-4:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April 4th-May 11th* (Session I) and May 16th-June 15th (Session II)

*Garden Explorers will not be held on April 18th or April 20th due to school vacation)

Price: $160/session

Drop Off & Pick Up: Students will meet our Farm to School Staff at the end of the school day in the NES cafeteria and walk to the garden together. Participants are to be picked up 4:30pm at the Joyce N. Furman Youth Garden located on First Way. Students participating in aftercare programs will be escorted to their next activity by Farm to School staff.

Summer Bridge Registration!

Summer Bridge 2017 Registration is Open!

Join Farm to School and Nantucket Community School staff as we make the “bridge” from camp to school! Summer Bridge brings academic elements into a fun week of camp that is focused around farming and food systems in our natural habitat! Participants will spend week learning, playing, experimenting, and exploring island farms and forests as they prepare for the school year!

Who: Children Ages 6-12
Summer Bridge is available to participants who are registered in a Nantucket-based school for the upcoming fall and who have participated in Garden Explorers in spring 2017, Half-Day in the Garden in spring 2017, ACK Farming and Gardening with Sustainable Nantucket in summer 2017, or another of Nantucket Community School’s ACKventure programs during summer 2017.

When: 8:30am-3:30pm, Monday-Friday

Dates: August 21st-August 25th & August 28th-September 1st

ACK Farming and Gardening Registration!

ACK Farming and Gardening is back for Summer 2017!

Join Farm to School staff as we plant, harvest, taste, and play in the Joyce N. Furman Youth Garden! In this hands-on program, participants will learn about the local food system as we explore how seeds, soil, and plants impact our gardens, our bodies, and our community!

Who: Children Ages 6-12

When: 9:00am-12:00pm, Monday-Friday (This program can be joined with ACKventure Extended Day from 12:00pm-4:00pm for a seamless, all-day summer adventure!)

Dates: July 10th-July 14th
July 17th-July 21st
July 24th-July 28th
July 31st-August 4th
August 7th-August 11th
August 14th-August 18th

Price: $190/week

Drop Off & Pick Up: Participants will meet our Farm to School Staff at the Joyce N. Furman Youth Garden off of First Way, next to the Nantucket Public Schools Central Office. Children in Extended Day will be escorted by Farm to School Staff to their next activity in the Extended Day program. Families will be notified in drop off and pick up locations are altered due to inclement weather.

Sustainable Nantucket is delighted to announce that we are the recipient of a grant from Stop & Shop that supports our Summer Garden Coordinator position AND will allow Farm to School to purchase two vacuum packers for the Nantucket Public Schools cafeterias!

ss_logohThese vacuum packers will allow Nantucket Public Schools food services to prepare and serve Nantucket-grown produce during the school year! We are grateful for this opportunity and so excited to put these vacuum packers to use for our island students!

Summer 2017 “Farm to School” Curriculum Coordinator!

Sustainable Nantucket is seeking a Farm to School Curriculum Coordinator for Summer 2017!

Job Description: Under the direction of the Farm to School Coordinator, plan, implement, and oversee the Farm to School Summer Camp, Children’s Farm to Fork Cooking Classes, and Bridge Back to School Program. Work in partnership with the Farm to School Garden Coordinator to instruct all Farm to School programs. Teach and oversee the Farm to School High School Apprentice in instructing Farm to School activities. Uphold the mission of Sustainable Nantucket and the goals of the Farm to School Program.

 

Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years or older
  • 2-years of summer camp experience or combination of youth program and supervisory experience
  • First Aid and CPR Certifications (or ability to obtain within the first month of employment)
  • CORI Authorization
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Interest in agriculture and environmental stewardship
  • Requires a positive attitude, strong communication skills, flexibility, creativity, dependability, shows attention to detail, can problem solve, ability to collaborate with others and work independently
